It looks like customers with Lefthand Networks iscsi storage software running on anything other than an HP server are seeing the vanishing point getting closer and closer. Lefthand has become an appliance component @ HP.

Wow, that's too bad.
I had always thought that LHN's software-only option was a neat deal for the entry-level VMware crowd that needed a "software SAN" on their existing servers.
Goes to show what happens when server guys try to do storage -- everything becomes a server.

Yeah, Maybe a startup will come along and backfill the void, but it doesn't seem that likely.

Oh boy, this is not the move I would have made if I was HP. I know lots of folks who used LeftHand ONLY because they could run it on what they brung. In fact, I recommended that two end users from Storage Decisions look at LeftHand/HP for this reason. So much for that!

Best bet so far is StarWind. They're adding replication, snapshots and VTL to their Windows iSCSI target. Could be a decent alternative but being Windows can't do the grow existing logical array by adding boxes ala LeftHand and Marc's old friends in NH.

Nice to hear from you Howard, thanks.

Ok guys, settle down. We still sell our SAN software that runs on any server. It's called the Virtual SAN Appliance: http://www.vmware.com/appliances/directory/1022
We are not like you hardware junkies; we have true virtualization technology that isn't tied to anything, which opens the doors to unlimited possibilities.
That's why you see all the VMware guys running around with LeftHand on their notebooks, because it allows them to spin up a SAN anywhere without having to lug around hardware.

Guys,
I hate to say I told you so, but look at the date on this blog:

As for replacements, get ready there are a couple coming.

George, you are such a sage dude! OK, so what else is coming - can you drop any hints?
Posted by: marc farley | February 13, 2009 at 07:24 AM
You guys have selective hearing. LEFTHAND-HP STILL HAS A SOFTWARE ONLY OPTION. IT’S CALLED VSA. It can turn any storage server into a SAN.
And Chuck, wake up, it doesn’t have to be a server either. It can turn a 3PAR or EMC Fibre Channel LUN into a shared, fault tolerant iSCSI SAN, or synchronously replicate between a 3PAR and EMC SAN.
George, you've been out of sales too long.

Hi John
Checked again with the old guard HP types, and they told me that -- before long -- the LHN products would only be sold/offered on HP server hardware. I could be wrong, but the press release was pretty clear on that point.
